In BEAUTIFUL CREATURES, spellcaster Lena Duchannes falls in love with the mortal Ethan Lawson Wate.What intrigued me: I love everything witchy.Great Southern Feel - but ultimately TOO muchBEAUTIFUL CREATURES is your typical southern gothic with an eerie feel that plays into all the cliches you'd associate with the American South. Paired with an ounce of magic, this has the potential to become a fantastically unique and interesting series that puts a fun spin on the paranormal romance genre. But BEAUTIFUL CREATURES utterly loses itself in telling the story.While I am a big fan of backstories and interwoven story lines, BEAUTIFUL CREATURES has too much of that. We have the tragic story about Lena's and Ethan's deceased family members, their Civil War doppelgangers, Lena's family coming into town, Ethan's mother's best friend being tied into it etc. But none of the story lines is actually tied together with the ending, which ultimately mak. in my opinion.I get that it's a series and it's supposed to make sense in the bigger picture, but BEAUTIFUL CREATURES simply lacks in structure. I found myself confused while reading this a lot and not understanding what was happening half the time. After finishing, I wasn't satisfied, I wasn't intrigued, I was simply confused.Family Relations: TOO COMPLICATED!!BEAUTIFUL CREATURES wants to be a character-driven novel. There are so many different people playing key roles, having a backstory of their own and whatnot - but it's just not thought through. By the end of the novel I STILL didn't get how everyone is related. What always annoys me with having so many characters is using family gatherings as an excuse for making the reader familiar with all characters. It's even worse to introduce them one after another. GarcÃa and Stohl introduce a lot of technical terms related to witchcraft, from the specific names for every type of caster to stuff like the Sanguini's Circle, a type of witchy ritual, but resolve none of it. Again: I'm confused.I skimmed a lot of this novel, I'm not going to lie. For the thin story line it's just way too long and Ethan and Lena don't have chemistry at all. It just couldn't keep my interest, despite it's undoubtedly rich world building and distinct atmosphere. It's certainly one of those books that are hit or miss, and for me? It's tragically a miss.
I was curious. I've never read a graphic novel adaptation before. I chose Beautiful Creatures because I remember liking the original novel, which I read back in 2010. I also ordered Vampire Academy: The Graphic Novel but this one is still on his way to me.I read the graphic novel because I more or less forgot what happens in the novel. It means that I still remember something of the plot but most of the details are gone. I wanted to refresh my memory, let's say. But the graphic novel's not the way to do that. I'll try to explain: in this version there are a lot of things that are left unsaid. One example is Lena and the decreasing numbers on his hand. The artist shows them in many panels but it's not explained what they stand for. Or when they introduce Lena's family. You just get panels after panels of people with special powers and then they disappear till the end of the novel.For what the art is concerned, well... I've been reading manga for half of my life and the drawings in this graphic novel are way too sketch for my habit.I don't know. I wasn't entirely satisfied with it. I'll try with another graphic novel adaption and then I'll decide if the genre deserve my attention or not.
An dieser Stelle kann ich mit gutem Gewissen behaupten, die Autorinnen haben alles richtig gemacht.Die Ausgangssituation des Buches ist eine Mischung aus "alt bekannt" und "erfrischend anders". Die Geschichte wird (bis auf einige wenige Seiten gegen Ende des Buches) aus der Sicht des 16jähriges Ethan erzählt. Er wohnt in einem kleinen Kaff in den Südstaaten der USA. Das Leben läuft in langweiligen geregelten Bahnen, jeder kennt seine Stellung in der Gesellschaft und jeder weiss alles über jeden. Niemand hinterfragt die offensichtliche Idylle. Alles ändert sich, als Lena in das Haus ihres merkwürdigen Onkels zieht. Die Verbindung zwischen ihr und Ethan ist dem Leser schnell klar, doch dann wird's spannend- und eben irgendwie anders. Die Autorinnen verlassen sehr schnell die bei übernatürlichen Liebesgeschichten so häufig vorkommende gradlinige Erzählweise. Sie erzählen tatsächlich eine Geschichte und bauen nicht nur ein zerbrechliches Gerüst um ansonsten peinliche Dialoge.Und diese Geschichte setzt sich zusammen wie ein Puzzle. Die einzelnen Elemente hat man schnell Identifiziert: seltsame Träume, ein "Geisterhaus", ein Onkel, der das Haus nicht verlässt, Unfälle, Voodoo, Magie, "Zeitsprünge" in den Bürgerkrieg, Stammbäume, Vorurteile, Familiengeschichten, Tod, Verrat, der beste Freund, Entscheidungen, verrückte Tanten, eine abergläubige Haushälterin und so wahnsinnig vieles mehr. Die große Frage die sich dem Leser stellt ist wie sich das ganze zusammenfügt, was ist wichtig, was nur nette Deko, wer spielt für welches Team, wem kann man vertrauen? Vieles wird geklärt, anderes eindeutig ins nächste Buch mitgenommen (es soll vier geben) und bei vielen Kleinigkeiten hofft man einfach, dass sie noch einmal aufgegriffen werden.Übrigens sind auch viele der Nebencharaktere so toll herausgearbeitet, dass man sich einfach für sie und ihre Geschichte interessiert und hofft, dass auch sie ihre Berechtigung in der Geschichte behalten.Was mir besonders gut gefallen hat sind die "Kommunikationsmöglichkeiten" die sich die Autorinnen für ihre Protagonisten überlegt haben. Somit wird ermöglicht die Handlung voranzutreiben, Lena und Ethan können auch getrennt voneinander agieren, ohne dass die Innigkeit ihrer Verbindung verloren geht.Eine tolle Liebesgeschichte mit einer spannenden Handlung zu verbinden und beides gleichermaßen fesselnd zu gestalten ist eine Kunst die die wenigsten beherrschen.Bleibt nur zu hoffen, dass die Autorinnen den Erwartungen, die sie mit diesem ersten Band schüren auch gerecht werden können und nicht irgendwann den Überblick über ihre gelegten Spuren und Hinweise verlieren. Ich jedenfalls bin mehr als gespannt wie das Bild am Ende aussieht.
