The last decade of the 20th century has revealed a remarkable diversity of techniques being used to treat the ceramic surface. In this book, Matthias Ostermann primarily looks at the ceramic surface in the context of the vessel and platter that includes the non-functional, the metaphoric, the narrative and even the sculptural. In this he attempts to give a broad overview of contemporary techniques and approaches, covering as many making and firing procedures as possible, and focussing on the works of about 200 ceramicists from around the world. The forward discusses some of the decorative trends in ceramic production preceding the 20th century and gives an analysis of post-war ceramic aesthetic growth in Europe and North America. The book is divided into ten chapters covering specific areas of methodology and encompassing a wide variety of techniques for making, decorating and firing, whilst also covering the full spectrum of clays and firing temperatures. Each artist's image is accompanied by technical information, as well as a statement of inspiration and motivation, to give insight into the concept of each piece.

Matthias Ostermann is a well-known ceramist. Born in Germany, he has lived in many countries though he now resides in Montreal, Canada. He has exhibited internationally and his work can be found in the permanent collections of many museums. He is the author of The New Maiolica: Contemporary Approaches to Colour and Technique, also published by A&C Black.

If you've ever wondered, "How'd they do that," after looking at many of the frequently published ceramic pieces, this is the book for you. If you'veever wanted to get that "reduction fired" look out of your electric kiln, this is the book for you. If you're tired of the shiny, glassy, boring surfaces that come out of most oxidation firings, this is the book for you. There is no doubt about it: this is a beautiful book. The paper, binding, print, photography is all first-rate. But I was disappointed, nonetheless. The book is basically a collection of pieces by many different ceramic artists, with equally different surface treatments. In essence: a coffee-table book. Not that I mind that so much, but I have to limit myself to the pictures - because I can hardly stand the "Artist's Statements" that accompany each photo (I can't stand being told what to think, and I heartily agree with Jean Cocteau: "An artist cannot speak about his art any more than a plant can discuss horticulture.") If you like that kind of thing, then this might be just the book for you.One thing I did appreciate was the short paragraph on how the piece was made, but these frequently appear to be simply obfuscations and filler text, and I can't help wonder if these artists aren't more than a little insecure.
This beautiful book is a welcome addition to my collection. Its very simple format of one image per page and brief written description of the work, often by the artist, makes it an inspiring and yet relaxing book to flick through with your feet up on the couch. As far as technical information goes, this is more of a starting point - leading you to research further the surface finishes and techniques that most appeal to you.
